Who Trained Your Trainer?

What makes a great lash training? For those of you who are thinking about getting trained in lash extensions, here are a few things to look for.

Where Did the Trainer Get Their Credentials?

What I mean is, who trained them? Did they get certified? Most trainers have been working behind the chair for several years or longer. Just because someone has been working at the craft, doesn’t mean they are practicing correct protocols. So this question is important. Who certified them? For full disclosure, I was certified in 2006 and spent five full days from 9-5 working on perfecting the skill of how to be an effective trainer. It is an art and a science, and was a long and gruelling to say the least. The person who trained me was a nurse by profession and extremely safety and sanitation oriented. I learned amazing professional practices from her. Now as a trainer, I pass these practices on to my students.

What You Need to Know...

Before signing on the dotted line, ask these questions. Does the training program have clearly defined topics to be covered? Safety, sanitation, application techniques, product knowledge, client consultation, re-fill procedures, client aftercare and last but not least, who shouldn’t get lashes. These are the most important topics to be covered. The client consultation is extremely important and should be covered in depth. This should include client consultation forms and photo release forms. We should also know what to do if our client develops a reaction to any of the products we are using. I have seen many topics covered in groups on social media, and frankly, it blows my mind that certified students have so many questions, asking about reactions, releases forms, eye issues and claim they didn’t receive proper paperwork or training! It make me a bit sad that some “trainers” aren’t covering these topics and it does nothing for the standards in our industry. If you are considering a lash training, use your judgement, have conversations and get something in writing that clearly spells out what is covered in the class. There are many great trainings out there, check out The GladGirl Artist Directory with listings for trainers in your area.

Hi Cocoa,

Yes you’re right, you do need more experience. Ask your friends, family and anyone who you think likes lashes and make-up if they would like you to apply lashes on them. Maybe some salon owners you know would like them. Introduce yourself to salon owners as well and offer free lash application to the stylists at the salon. Offer to apply them for free! You need to keep at it, the experience you need is so important and don’t expect to get paid right away until you have developed some confidence. You might contact your instructor and ask her for some pointers where you find yourself unsure or lacking information.

Best of luck!

Hi Maryanne,
I live in the Bay Area am licensed and had a friend who was a trainer for a lash company do a 2 day course with me. I learned basic lashing and basic refills.
My problem is that’s all I know how to do and need a lot more experience. I want to become a f/t lash artist so bad but have very little experience. I have applied a handful set of lashes but it has come to a halt. What is my best option to get more experience with lashing? No one wants to hire a person with little experience.

Thank you,
Cocoa
