Getting into the right vibe can be the most valuable asset in the world that sometimes feels upside down. Feeling in a grounded state helps one to be guided to make the right decisions and therefore take the right action. Self-care is not just about holding yourself, at times we are holding space for our clients, our friends, and our families.
Here are a few tips to create a space inside yourself to be prepared for anything life brings you. I am Sarah, a life coach, specifically trailed in embodiment and practices to regulate the nervous system. This will be the first blog of a series that GladGirl will be publishing to help nourish you, not only into being resilient but thriving.
A morning ritual can bring structure to your life in a game-changing way. Waking up in the morning is like turning on a computer, and a morning practice will determine the apps you are running. Do not let the world around you determine what is downloaded onto your device.
A morning practice does not need to be a big spiritual event, it can be anything that you intentionally do for 5-10 minutes. No matter the ritual, I recommend a practice to be sans phone, sans actual electronics, completely disconnected from the matrix outside.
An accessible morning practice is a tea ritual. There is a benefit in every detail of a tea ritual. The preparation of the tea, the warm tea cup in your hands… Take deep breaths smell the aroma from the herbs, and feel gratitude for being able to breathe, for your heartbeat. Feel intentionally grounded to your seat, all the way down through the earth.
Think of your breath as a lover that is with you at all times. When you develop the musculature of this practice, even washing the dishes can be a deeply powerful practice. Being grateful and calm is truly a superpower.
Another powerful practice is getting into the water, a bath, shower, lake, or pool. Getting into water daily takes a bit more time than a cup of tea, however, it comes with enormous benefits. If the opportunity is there don't be afraid to be playful.
Only have a few moments or on the go? Run just your hands under cold water at a sink. Running your hands under cold water can be done at any time throughout your day to achieve a more ‘dropped in’ state.
If you find yourself feeling anxious or scattered throughout the day one of the best things you can do is move the energy. Don't push it down or ignore it, move the icky feeling. One of the best examples of this in nature is when an animal shakes its whole body. Animals understand how to transition energy states.
The Practice: I recommend setting a timer for two minutes. Then shake, jump around, dance, anything… just move what you are feeling for a full two minutes. Most people will want to stop before the timer stops, and push through to the end.
You will find yourself transitioning out of the headspace you were in prior. The circulation will do some good for the whole body. Moving the energy will keep depression from setting in, depression is quite literally a feeling of being pressed down.
Getting sun and air does the body well, the mind and spirit too. Notice the pleasure of the sun on your face, the breeze on your skin, what else can you see, feel, or hear that you can find pleasure in? The birds are signing for you, the trees are dancing, and all that is required is your awareness.
Another wonderful go-to is to literally stop and smell the roses. Some flowers that are often available on walks on the west coast are roses and jasmine. Take a moment to take a big whiff, take the aroma in and notice the joy available. I like to walk the same path each day as something to look forward to in the flowers on my route. Every once in a while changing the path with the curiosity of what delicious smells lay in the unknown.
If there is something bothering you or do you have a big decision to make? Another practice is to light a candle. Be safe of course, and never leave a candle burning unattended. If you are able to, leave the candle burning for three hours.
Decide you are not going to worry about the problem at hand. Suspend your disbelief, and have faith that there is a solution. When you notice the burning candle, let it remind you that there is no need to worry.
You may be surprised at what comes to your mind. Einstein once said, ’I stop thinking, swim in silence, and the truth comes to me.” The more you utilize this practice, the more powerful it will become.
