Happy Wednesday lash lovers! If you’re one of the many of us who would rather spend that extra 15 minutes hitting the snooze button than applying an ungodly amount of mascara onto your thin and sparse lashes; then chances are you’ve considered eyelash extensions at one point or another. But you may have questions about how to properly take care of your extensions at home, so you can get the most bang for your buck. Well you’re in luck, because I’m coming at you with five of my top tips on making those extensions go the extra mile.
You might not realize, but good eyelash extension health and retention starts before you ever step foot into the salon. There are a few tips I have when it comes to preparing for your appointment that can help stretch your eyelash extension life and ensure you’re getting the most out of each appointment.
First up is makeup removal. Taking this step will not only help ensure that your lashes are lasting up to full 6 weeks, but can also be a saver on your wallet as some artists charge a deep clean fee if you come to any appointment with mascara or eyeshadow on your lashes. I recommend not wearing waterproof mascara the week of your lash appointment to make sure your lashes do not have oil build up. If you are wearing mascara on a regular basis you’ll want to ensure you clean any mascara off your lashes beforehand, doing a thorough job of cleaning each individual lash and the base of the lashes where hard to reach mascara might be holding on. This will ensure the appointment goes quicker as your lash artist won’t have to deep clean your lashes, and will also help the retention of your extensions as the glue won’t be attached to any leftover makeup, but rather directly onto the natural lash. Be sure to reach for a cleanser that doesn’t contain any oil, as this can leave lash extensions prematurely shedding. To avoid this grab GladGirlWipe and Wink Make-up Remover to safely and effectively get the job done.
One of the biggest mistakes new lash lovers might make is getting their lashes wet before the adhesive has fully set and cured. This is normally about 24 hours after your full set. So to help minimize the stress of getting your lash extensions wet, try to shower before your appointment, as this can also help remove any oils on your skin that may negatively impact the lifespan of your set.
Having realistic lash goals is key to healthy lash retention and easy maintenance in between fills. This may look like being realistic about the amount of lashes you may be able to get. If you have very sparse, thin or damaged lashes you’ll want to aim for a very natural lash set to help keep your lashes safe and not add any extra weight that will cause the lashes to shed prematurely. You’ll also want to pay attention to lash length and style. If you wear glasses or if you tend to be bothered by lashes touching the inner corner of your eye/nose you won’t want to ask your stylist to give you those extra long lashes, but instead stay within a very moderate length to again, help ease the tension that rubbing up against your glasses may cause.
You may be hesitant to clean your lashes as you might be worried to pull or cause any excess shedding. But, cleaning your lashes every night is a fantastic way to help your natural lashes stay healthy as well as removes any oil and dirt build up that can cause your lash extensions to fall out prematurely. A great option for a lash cleanser is GladGirl Wash and Wink lash extension cleanser. This eyelash extension cleanser offers gentle yet effective removal of any buildup that can harm extensions, while staying safe to the adhesive by not containing any oils. You’ll also want to reach for a soft but densely packed brush to apply the cleanser with, so reach for a brush like GladGirl’sEyelash Cleaning Brush. Clean lashes also help you steer clear of any unwanted bacterial build up which is a sure way to have to remove those perfectly fanned lashes and take a break from all the glam.
The last step you can take in ensuring the best retention possible is having great aftercare! Firstly, you’ll want to gently brush out your lashes a couple times a day to help them stay in place and not twist. This can easily be done with a simple Spoolie, simply brushing the top and bottom side like you would when applying mascara. Another great option for face sleepers would be anEyelash Extension Sleep mask and Satin Pillow Case. These two tools will help your lashes to not get tugged and unnecessary pressure to be placed on them that can leave them deformed and shedding before their time. If you don’t love the idea of sleeping with a mask, be sure to sleep on your back with your hair pulled away from your face.
