Are you a salon/spa owner? If you are or thinking about it, let me share an experience I had recently that caused me to take a hard look at my own business etiquette. This short piece might cast some light on how the dreaded shadow of ‘gossip’ can flip all your wonderful efforts.
During a break while conducting a training class, my student and I shared thoughts on our past and futures. As we were talking, we were casually discussing various places we have worked. We were talking about the pros and cons of working in a corporate environment versus booth-renting or salon suites.
The Dazzle
I recalled a major moment for me about a boutique that had recently opened not far from me. About a month after they opened, I went to see the boutique in person. Let me say, I was dazzled!! The place was gorgeous. Glossy white with touches of grey and crystal. The space had the most exquisite wall coverings, ornate silver leaf mirrors, crystal sconces, plush seating areas, a fabulous tenant lounge. It was so beautifully appointed and finished and it had everything a suite could offer. I was over-the-moon impressed and flat out jealous. I wanted a place like that! I had always envisioned a workspace just like that. When I made that comment to my student she just laughed.
The Reality
For all the beautiful trappings, there were other things that weren't so pretty. The owner had a manager in place that was ruining her business destroying the loyalty and trust of her tenants: a looming cloud of gossip was flowing throughout the whole space, permeating every fabulous touch with darkness. Said manager was freely telling other tenants very personal and private information as to who was late with their rent, who had financial problems, who was squabbling with who and so on.
Let me just say this, it was as if someone took the biggest pin and popped the balloon I was idolizing. It blew up in my face and snapped me back to reality. That old saying: Pretty is as pretty does…? Well, I am here to say nothing will ruin your business faster than gossip. I know it can be hard to keep mum, but in the end, it’s so worth it! Trust is one of the most valuable assets we have so do all you can to ensure and protect that trust – it’s worth more that all the sparkle that crystal can offer.
